New Year, New Opportunities!

By Sarah Mansfield | Operations Manager

Hello (again) from SCP!

Wow, I don't know about you but it seemed like 2019 just FLEW by! We had a huge success with releases this past year, and have a few dozen more parrots nearly ready to go back out into the urban wild. Along with releases, SoCal Parrot was active in the rescue of 103 birds in 2019. We couldn't have saved all of those lives without your ongoing support and donations, which mean the world to us! Thank you SO MUCH for your help!

The beginning of a new year is often a time for reflection and goal-setting. Our staff is never short on ideas, but often we get preoccupied with rescues or daily animal care tasks and the secondary projects are set aside. This year, we have managed to set quite a few lofty-yet-reachable goals for our organization.

Brooke, our founder and Director, along with our board member Dr. Pat Latas, will be pursuing research grants and setting up fundraiser campaigns to expand our hospital equipment. This one might take longer than just 12 months, but we are looking forward to the expansion and chance to gather more data from urban parrots that we rescue. The data collection is non-invasive, as our primary objective is to not do harm to any birds in our care, and it will allow us to continue fighting for new local, state, and federal protections of wild parrots!

Josh, our co-founder, is still hard at work on completion of our new outdoor aviary complex. We are so excited for the enclosures to be completed, and birds to be moved. It is the beginning of a new chapter for SCP- and a huge step forward!

Finally, this year I am focusing more of my time and attention on local community outreach and education. SCP is participating in the San Diego Public Library's "Spring into STEAM" program from March through May, and we are actively booking more local events and speaking engagements throughout the areas where we rescue wild parrots. I'm excited to bring more folks on board to our cause, share our work and love of parrots, and get people interested in becoming citizen scientists.

Of course, none of these projects would be possible without your help. Thank you again, so very much, for the ongoing support and monetary donations you send to our little organization. We are so grateful to be doing this work, and we know you all have our backs!

Wishing you a very happy 2020- and beyond!
