Help Save SA's Wildlife during extreme heat

By Mish Simpson | Operations Manager

Tooperang Fire Response
Dear GlobalGiving Supporters,
Thank you for your continued generosity and belief in our mission. 2026 has begun with a bang for SKER, and we wanted to share a brief but important update on the extraordinary challenges our team has faced — and how your support is directly making a difference on the ground.
Over January, extreme heatwaves and multiple bushfire events have made this our busiest start to the year in memory. The severity of the conditions has placed immense pressure on wildlife across southern South Australia.
Clinic Surge: 19 Koalas in One Day
During a prolonged extreme heat event, our clinic experienced an unprecedented surge in admissions. 19 koalas arrived in a single 24-hour period, many suffering from dehydration, heat stress and chronic illness.
Our staff and volunteers worked around the clock, and we even had to call in additional veterinary support to manage the caseload safely and effectively.
 Tooperang Fire Response
When the Tooperang Fires broke out, our trained rescuers were quickly deployed as lead wildlife responders. For more multiple days during a short window of reduced bushfire threat weather, teams were in the field 10–12 hours per day, systematically searching firegrounds for injured and displaced wildlife, triaging on site and providing necessary veterinary care.
Deep Creek Fires: Formal Response Activation
As we write this update, SKER is now formally involved in the coordinated wildlife response for the Deep Creek Fires. Our rescuers, vets and volunteers are preparing for an influx of animals into our vet centre and to conduct intensive search and rescue operations, working alongside emergency services to locate and help animals in the midst of one of the most devastating fire events we’ve seen.
Brief But Important: Your Support Matters
Given the intensity of the situation, we need to keep this update short — but we couldn’t let another moment pass without saying:
Your support is making a real, tangible impact right now.
The resources you help provide are supporting:
*Emergency field rescues in extreme conditions
* Rapid-response veterinary care for heat-affected and fire-injured native animals
* Around-the-clock clinic support during peak admission surges
* Logistics, transport, and feed/supply mobilisation when every minute counts
In these hard times for wildlife, your generosity ensures that SKER can be there — operational, ready and capable — at the moments when animals need us most.
Thank you for standing with us.
With deep gratitude,
The SKER Team
