Turtle Tracking - Box Turtles On The Move

By Noah Baity, Paige Dunn and Danielle Smith | Wildlife Conservation Interns

On the move they go! Box turtles here at Piedmont Wildlife Center sure have been active this summer. Whether they moved two feet or even half a mile in the span of a week, they are just itching to explore.

Currently there are eight turtles that we, as interns, track on a weekly basis. Just like any other turtle trackers, we find them using radio telemetry. You might ask, "what does that even mean?" Well, typically radio telemetry involves the use of three components: a transmitter that sends out radio waves, a telemetry receiver that picks up those waves, and a person that loves turtles.

Looking back at the past couple of weeks, our favorite turtle to track was named/marked AOW. This turtle moved around so much! One day he was on one side of the park, and the next week he had moved all the way to the other. Though it was a long journey for us to take to find him, it was so much more rewarding.

While turtle tracking may not seem like a big deal to everyone, there are many important things to consider about tracking that can: A) show the value of collecting turtle data and B) show how you can help fellow trackers.

Sweet, precious, box turtle data. Why do we love it? Well, the more we learn about box turtles, the better we can help conserve their populations. Turtle data also lets us know what factors contribute to their decrease in abundancy. Some of these factors can be everyday driving, construction, or clear cutting. Only by collecting this data and learning the main contributors, can we make a change.

One way you can contribute to turtle tracking is donating! Though it might not seem like much, anything you donate to us here at Piedmont Wildlife Center would be a big help to us! Our donors so far have helped us a tremendous amount and we want to send out a HUGE thank you! For those thinking about donating, consider the following quote:

"Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he sticks his neck out." - James Byrant Conant

For more information on box turtles, check out our new Turtle Trekkers website linked below! Through this website you can contribute to our box turtle research by submitting photos of box turtles you come across. You can also look for previous turtles found, images of how to properly take a photo for the website, and check out the interactive leaderboards to see who's currently involved.
