Turtle Time

By Colton McAllister | Wildlife Conservation Intern

As the summer comes to a close, and the world continues to stay cautious, it is a great time to reflect on the turtle tracking project that our interns have been hard at work collecting data for the last couple months.  While the summer was certainly not normal for our staff and interns at Piedmont Wildlife Center, it didn't seem to affect the turtles or their weekly routine nearly as much.  With the sweltering heat most days, the turtles - same as us - seem to be staying close to the cabin and under some shade.

Over the last couple of months, we have been able to track our six turtles multiple times a week - noting their movement patterns and favorite spots while also entering new turtles into our database with the help of our very excited campers and counselors on the property.

As an intern myself, it has been really interesting to learn about the use of telemetry and the importance of the turtle treckers citizen sciene project in general.  I have learned a lot about the field and it's importance to the North Carolina environment more than ever.  The excitement of finally finding that one turtle you've been looking for for a while is certainly a highlight of the experience!

Your support, especially during these unusual times is instrumental in the success of Piedmont Wildife Center, its education of the public, and our work in conservation research. Thank you to all of those who support our cause and have contributed to the success of our mission!

Feel free to check out our website to see other ways you can help, and email turtle@piedmontwildlifecenter.org to receive access to our EpiCollect project to start having fun tracking some turtles yourself!
