Help South African children achieve in Maths

2021 sees Green Shoots partnering with the Western Cape Education Department to roll out this Integrated Maths Program to 530 Primary schools. Your donations are ensuring that we are able to support even more schools additional to this new partnership. For each additional school we can support - learners will be able to progress through using the online Maths program and their teachers will receive real time analyses and support. Our goal for 2021 is to reach and support as many learners & schools as possible.

Schools opened for learners on the 15th Feb after a slightly delayed start to the new school year. Schools are adapting well to social distancing and COVID precautions in order to maximise learning despite the changes in classrooms. We are loving seeing learners already very busy completing their Brain Quests (online Maths activities).  Brain Quests can also be accessed on cell phones that have a browser (not just smart phones). So learners can still continue to learn even if they are at home!

This is the final Project report for “Help South African children achieve in Maths”. Thanks to your very generous donations, this project is now fully funded!

Green Shoots have been supporting Bongolethu Primary since November 2013. Due to the donations received:

• 386 learners from grade 4, 5 & 6 were registered on the online Maths programme for 2014 & the new classes are being registered for 2015
• Throughout 2014 the grade 4, 5 & 6learners completed 2 hours a week of Maths activities online with real-time feedback
• The 3 grade 4, 5 & 6 Maths teachers were trained to use the online maths resources and received in class support from the Green Shoots Curriculum Facilitator
• The Maths teachers were given support to use the data from the online resources to target issues with Maths concepts and also provide individualised support to learners
• The school ran additional Maths support classes for grade 6 using the online Maths exercises

The impact of this support: In the Annual National Assessments for Grade 6 for 2014, the school improved its pass % by 10% from its 2013 result. The learners are enjoying using the online Maths activities. They have greater confidence in their Maths abilities and are more willing to try more difficult concepts both in the computer centre and in class.

Bongolethu Primary teachers and learners are now empowered to continue with the online Maths Program for 2015 on their own. The Principal and staff are keen to build on the success of 2014.

Thanks to your donations, this school has changed. Learners now are enthusiastic about their Maths and there has been an improvement in achievement. Teachers have the backing from the online Maths lessons & real-time data to continually improve the Maths learning experience at the school.

Although this Project is now complete – we are scaling this successful model to provide additional support to two Primary schools in a new Project “Help more South African children achieve in Maths”. We would be very grateful of any donations for this new Project so that we can now assist 1,700 more learners to achieve their potential!
