We would like to thank you for the continued support to our organization, LGBT Voice Tanzania is now becoming bigger everyday, through your support our we have a nice office to run our daily activities, we are able to pay water, electricity and internet bills.
Our staff and volunteers have been busy organizing advocacy meetings and campaigns with the purpose of pushing the government to amend sections 154, 155 and 138 of the penal code that criminalize homosexuality.
Section 154 Unnatural offences:
''Any person who - has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature; permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature, commits an offence, and is liable to imprisonment for life and in any case to imprisonment for a term of not less than thirty years.''
Section 155 Attempt to commit unnatural offences:
"Any person who attempts to commit any of the offences specified under section 154 commits an offence and shall on conviction be sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than twenty years."
Section 138A Gross indecency:
"Any person who, in public or private commits, or is party to the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any person of, any act of gross indecency with another person, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not exceeding five years or to a fine not less than one hundred thousand shillings and not exceeding three hundred thousand shillings; save that where the offence is committed by a person of eighteen years of age or more in respect of any person under eighteen years of age, a pupil of a primary school or a student of a secondary school the offender shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not less than ten years, with corporal punishment, and shall also be ordered to pay compensation of an amount determined by the court to the person in respect of whom the offence was committed for any injuries caused to that person."
We are also meeting with law enforcers and lawers to try find some legal protect for LGBT people who are subject to mistreatment by the police, including cases of physical abuse, bribery, harrasment, intimidation, eviction and violent attack over the streets and public places and a number of youth who are expelled from schools just because of their sex orientation and gender identity. We still have too much to do change the things around because the LGBT people who are subject to threats or violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity cannot turn to the police for help for fear that they may face arrest or abuse.
I kindly apeal for your continued support this importan work of making Tanzania a safe place for LGBT and all people. LGBT Voice Tanzania has to be sustainable to continue promoting, protecting and defending the rights of LGBT people in Tanzania. The organization has no institutional funder but depend on your voluntary donations that have brought us this far.
Together we can.
