Youth Environmental Eco-Camp to commence soon

By Janet Anne Cuthbertson | Project leader

We wish to update our information about the Young Environmental Ambassador Eco Camps. Due to Covid 19 and various lockdown situations this year, it has been difficult to arrange these tours as schools have often been closed and youth dispersed. However, we intend to continue with this important movement again during 2022.

The importance of environmental awareness and education is of paramount importance for our Rural Youth as they are the Leaders of Tomorrow. Food security is also a serious concern and many children need better access to wholesome food.

One of the solutions is to encourage the development of trench organic home gardens (Eco-Circles) as the area the youth live in is mainly sand forest or sand veld vegetation. Both types of vegetation are very fragile and the soil holds fertility only in its naturally vegetated state. Once the indigenous vegetation is removed it may grow one or perhaps even two crops of maize or other staple foods. However, the soil then turns to desert-like conditions and its fertility is depleted leaving tracts of dry sandy areas that even cattle do not thrive on. Thus small home trench food gardens, fertilized adequately with organic materials is a wonderful solution.

Another challenge of unsustainable living in the area is that medicinal and also other types of plants and trees, many endangered and on the red data list of threat are removed and lost forever.

To encourage small home gardens while leaving the larger parts of indigenous vegetation protected is a win-win solution all around: The biodiversity of the area is protected, food sources from nature are protected and the soil retains its fertility helping to prevent desert-like land from being left in the wake of unsustainable land use.

Please support our work to once again commence the Youth Eco-Camps!

Thank you.
