Dear GlobalGivers,
It’s been a while since the last time we told you about this project in Metlatonoc, Guerrero, Mexico. But here we are!
This year, the implementation had a very significant challenges: the situation of extreme poverty in which the communities find themselves, and the lack of basic health services is very serious in the context of the pandemic, since the population does not have access to medical services in order to know their needs.
But, we are so happy to tell you that we are working for end the child marriage in 2 new Metlatonoc’s communities: Yucunduta and San Juan Huexoapa and - because of the pandemic - we adapt our project with technologies that allows the implementation remotely. Also, these adaptations implied strategic alliances and work with local organizations.
Through the implementation of the project, we observed that girls were able to identify their rights. They also pointed out that all people have equal rights, that men and women have the same rights, that those living with a disability have the right to receive support, that rights carry responsibilities (such as cleaning their room, helping at home and respecting others) and that it is important to report when someone violates rights.
Finally, we share with you a testimony for a 13-year-old girl in Metlatonoc: "I have the right to whom to marry and how many children to have and not to be sold, as it would be treating me as a thing".
Thank you for helping this little girl to become an agent of change. We can't wait to keep you updated over the year.
With gratitude,
The Yo quiero Yo puedo team
