Training on local repellent remedies

By James Malinga | Project leader

Greetings GlobalGiving donor,

Am glad to report to you about our malaria intervention in our area of operation using the funds we received from you.

We carried out a one week training program on use of local repellents to prevent malaria among rural community households.

The primary aim of this training program was to educate community members about malaria prevention strategies through the preparation and application of locally made mosquito repellents. Given the high incidence of malaria in Central Uganda, this initiative focused on empowering locals to take preventive measures against mosquito bites and reduce malaria transmission in their communities.

Training Overview:

The training workshops were conducted over five days, engaging 185 participants from different villages. Participants included local community leaders, health workers, women’s groups, and youth.

Key Activities:

1. Introduction to Malaria:
- Overview of malaria transmission, symptoms, and consequences.
- Discussion on the importance of prevention in reducing malaria incidence.

2. Local Remedies Workshop:
- Instruction on the preparation of mosquito repellents using locally sourced ingredients:
- Essential oils (e.g., citronella, eucalyptus, and lavender).
- Natural extracts (e.g., neem and garlic).
- Practical sessions where participants made their own repellents.

3. Demonstrations and Distribution:
- Live demonstrations showcasing the effectiveness of homemade repellents.
- Distribution of sample products for participants to test in their households.

4. Community Engagement:
- Group discussions on integrating these practices into daily life.
- Strategies to promote awareness about malaria prevention within the community.

5. Feedback and Evaluation:
- Collecting feedback from participants regarding the training effectiveness.
- Discussion of challenges faced and potential improvements for future programs.

Outcomes:

Increased Knowledge:Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of malaria prevention and treatment options.

Skill Development: Community members learned practical skills in preparing their own mosquito repellents, fostering self-reliance.

Community Empowerment: The program encouraged collaboration among community members, building a sense of collective responsibility toward malaria prevention.

Follow-Up Plans: A follow-up plan was established to monitor the implementation of repellents and ongoing malaria awareness efforts in the villages.

Challenges:

Limited access to some of the essential ingredients due to local supply issues.

Variability in participant engagement levels depending on prior knowledge and interest in the topic.

Conclusion:

The malaria prevention training program in Mpigi District Villages successfully equipped community members with essential knowledge and skills to combat malaria effectively. By fostering a culture of prevention through the use of local remedies, the initiative has laid the groundwork for sustained community health improvement.

Next Steps:
Conduct periodic follow-up training sessions.

Collaborate with local health authorities to integrate these practices into broader health initiatives.

Organize community health days to further spread awareness and promote ongoing education about malaria prevention.

Kindest regards
