Elevate the Impact on the Lives of Children

By Zeynep Nese Aslan | Donor Relations Coordinator

Southern Turkey was struck by two massive earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaras on February 6, 2023, resulting in significant loss of life and leaving countless people with the remnants of their homes, injuries, and profound distress.

As the region transitions towards the monumental task of reconstruction, a new fundraising campaign, titled Project CATE (Child Amputees of Turkiye Earthquake), has been initiated. The primary goal is to offer a renewed beginning for children deeply impacted by the earthquake. Collaborative efforts between healthcare experts from the United States and Turkey have come together to establish a lasting medical support infrastructure for these young individuals. Locally recognized as the Child Wellness Center Project (Çocuk Iyilik Merkezi Projesi) in Turkey, this initiative ensures essential medical care for the children affected from the disaster.

As stated in the previous reports, by October 2023, 77 boys and 52 girls had already undergone necessary prosthetic procedures, effectively addressing the prosthetic needs of a total of 129 children. Over the last four months, an additional 14 children have received prostheses, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 143.

Within the scope of the CATE initiative, 95 of these young individuals, ranging from ages 0-21, have been included in the scholarship program, a crucial facet of the CATE Project. The inclusion of more children in the scholarship program under the CATE Project is what we aspire to. To this end, we anticipate that over 150 children will benefit from this program by the end of the year. We would like to emphasize that this scholarship program will provide sustained educational support for our children throughout their academic endeavors.

Operating within the comprehensive scope of the CATE initiative, we progress with a deep understanding of the substantial need for prosthetic care, rehabilitation, and education among the children impacted by the earthquake. We recognize the magnitude of this demand and aspire to gradually extend our assistance to an increasing number of children.
