Springing into action!

By Kristy | Development Director

Spring is a time of renewal, of flowers and sunshine, and the countdown to summer. But for many in America, it begins a time of uncertainty. According to the USDA, 21 million children rely on free or reduced-fee lunches for their nutritional needs on an average school day.  When the school year ends, hunger sets in and these children often go without the food they need to thrive. The Move For Hunger network increases activity during the warmer months, when the majority of relocations and moves occur, ensuring additional deliveries of food donations to food banks across the country.  This year Move For Hunger is thrilled to be expanding partnership and additional donation opportunities to the Corporate Housing Industry as we announce a new charity partnership with The Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA), a professional trade association exclusively dedicated to supporting corporate housing providers around the world. Corporate housing is fully furnished temporary housing, typically in an apartment setting. Professional providers coordinate these “units” to include furniture, house wares, amenities, cable, phone, electric, water, etc., usually at one inclusive cost to the company and typically for over 30 days. In March, Move For Hunger announced the first partnership with corporate housing provider, SuiteAmerica. SuiteAmerica locations in Washington D.C. have committed to support the hungry by providing a collection container for non-perishable food items, giving clients the option to donate unwanted food upon checking-out. Bargain Movers Inc. of Maryland will be providing their services to transport and deliver the donated food directly to local food banks. The service is free to customers, and turns every extended stay into an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, simply by donating non-perishables upon checking out.

"SuiteAmerica has always believed in being a responsible corporate citizen," says Lorna Bosco, SuiteAmerica National Relocation Business Manager. "This partnership with Move For Hunger was a natural fit. We are providing our clients with a very easy opportunity to give back. Now when clients check-out they will have an option to leave their food vs. throwing it out - they can leave knowing their food will be donated to the local food bank and that they are making an important contribution to hunger in the community. We are pleased to be the first corporate housing provider to partner with Move For Hunger and look forward to rolling this program out in locations across the United States."

Food drives are a great way to get involved!  Visit the Move For Hunger webpage for more information on how to hold a food drive in your community. Move For Hunger makes it easy to make a big difference with just a few small steps. We will send you boxes, create fliers, and even send a moving truck to deliver all the donations to your local food bank.

Here's a wonderful example of how you can make a difference:

More than 168,000 people in the state of Oklahoma are living on incomes that put them at risk of hunger each month. Nearly 40% of those at risk are children. With these startling statistics in mind, our friends at the Broken Arrow Public Schools launched their second annual district wide food drive. The schools teamed up with Accent Moving and Storage for this event. Thanks to their hard work, 12,528 pounds of non-perishable food items were donated to the local food bank. Their collections will provide 10,440 meals to those in need in Tulsa County, OK.

Thank you to all our supporters who are making a difference in the fight against hunger in their community!
