Every day the team here at Move For Hunger continues to be astonished by the amazing work of our partners in the moving industry. Not only are they collecting food during moves on a daily basis, they are community leaders that continually support and give back to their communities.
On Thursday, April 9th the Midwest fell victim to a massive array of at least 14 tornadoes. In Illinois, eight tornadoes ravaged through the state, the largest resulting in two fatalities and 22 injuries in Fairdale, IL. Sadly the storm destroyed 30 houses in Fairdale and significantly damaged at least 50 more.
In the wake of this destruction, our amazing movers Blackhawk Moving and Storage and Fort Dearborn Relocation sprung into action collecting food and items for those in need. Not only did they raise 940 pounds of food donations, Blackhawk and Fort Dearborn collected blankets, water, flashlights, work gloves, and 16-foot storage containers. The storage containers were positioned around homes that were severely damaged, as people were trying to salvage what they could of their belongings but had no where to put them. The donations collected were delivered to the Kirkland Fire Department, who have been organizing the relief efforts in Fairdale.
The fire department heading the relief efforts began to run out of room to store all the donations. Blackhawk and Fort Dearborn stepped in to assist, providing two 51-foot moving trailers to help out with storage.
Our partners help get people what they need, at a time when they need it the most...and that is Move For Hunger.
Today Wednesday, May 13th, GlobalGiving is matching every single online donation between 9:00amEST and midnight. That means that your donation will have double the impact! Please add "Help Fight Hunger" to your calendar today. Your support will make a difference in your community and to the 50 million Americans that struggle with hunger.
