As we turn another page on the calendar and welcome August, families are embracing the last few weeks of the carefree days of summer. For many of us, these weeks are filled with beach days, pool fun, parties and barbeques. But for the more than 17 million children struggling with hunger in America, these last few weeks of vacation are a very different picture. Without the benefit of free or reduced-price lunches during the school year, the long summer months are the cause of anxiety and uncertainty about where their next meal will come from; hunger does not take a summer vacation. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) 21 million children rely on the free and reduced school meals when school is in session. These meals provide a security that children are receiving at least one nutritious and stable meal. When school is out, the security of that meal is also over. Over the past years, there has been movement and an increase in Summer Food Service Programs but there is still a severe shortage of ways to ensure all children are receiving meals.
Since our founding Move For Hunger has now delivered over 5 million pounds of food to those in need, that is enough to feed 92,593 school buses filled with children. There is still time for you to take action before the end of summer and help us to deliver more food to those who so badly need it. Our team will provide you with all the tools that you need to hold a food drive, fundraise, and advocate to fight hunger in your community. This past July, the Move For Hunger network delivered nearly 25,000 pounds of food to food banks nationwide. With your support, we can double that in the month of August. Please contact our Events Manager, Erika@moveforhunger.org to hold a food drive in your office or community. Every child deserves carefree days without the worry of hunger.
