The holidays are right around the corner, and for most of us that means friends, family, and a ton of food – but what if you didn’t have enough to feed your children, never-mind inviting over your extended friends and family? Sadly, for the nearly 50 million Americans who are affected by food insecurity, this is a very real possibility, especially as the temperatures outside continue to drop and more people are forced to decide between buying groceries and paying the heating bill.
Trey Taylor, a high school student in North Carolina, decided that he didn’t want hunger to spoil the holidays for his neighbors in Wallace, N.C., so he reached out to our office for help. Trey knew he wanted to collect food, but he wasn’t sure where to start. From the moment we spoke to him, we knew he was passionate about having a real impact on hunger in his town this season, so our team got to work. With the help of a local moving company, Trey challenged his community to fight hunger and help him “fill-a-truck” in the local Food Lion parking lot with nutritious non-perishable food. His neighbors rose to the challenge and Trey collected more than 1,200 pounds of food, or 1,000 meals, for his local food bank.
We might not all have the time or energy to fight hunger the way Trey does, but we all share in his passion. He is just one of the thousands of people that we have helped to fight hunger and make a difference. How are you going to make a difference this holiday season for the 17 million children in the United States who go to bed hungry each night?
Please consider making a donation this holiday season. With each dollar donated to Move For Hunger, we are able to put three meals on the shelf of a local food bank.
