2015 Year in Review

By Adam Lowy | Executive Director

Greetings From Asbury Park!

Well, we made it through 2015! Boy, was it a busy year! One that was filled with challenges, growth, and impact. I’m especially proud of our incredible team: staff, network, donors, and volunteers for all their hard work and dedication. We could be here without your enduring passion for our mission.

In 2015, we joined the Alliance to End Hunger, a coalition of our nation’s leading hunger-relief organizations to reduce hunger by fostering greater collaboration; a fundamental concept at Move For Hunger. Last year, Tony Hall of the Alliance to End Hunger declared that the new “Sustainable Development Goals”, adapted by the UN to reduce food insecurity worldwide, were a road-map to eliminating world hunger by 2030. With nearly 50 million Americans struggling to keep food on their tables despite our economic recovery, ending hunger in the next 15 years seems daunting, but we are up for the challenge.

2015 was a year of incredible impact for Move For Hunger in the communities we serve. Our network has grown to include over 650 moving companies, 200+ real estate offices, 45 corporate housing providers, and some of our nation’s leading relocation management companies. These partners are committed to reducing food waste in every aspect of the relocation process. In addition to our day-to-day food collection from people who are moving, we organized over 400 food drives and began rescuing thousands of pounds of protein bars, peanut butter packs, and sports drinks from some of our nation’s largest races. Altogether, in 2015 we delivered nearly 2 MILLION pounds of food to food banks and pantries across North America – enough to provide over 1.6 MILLION meals to individuals in need.

With our revamped website in 2015, we saw a record 230,000+ visitors – more than double last year’s total! Nearly 30,000 of you used our Find A Mover tool to choose a socially responsible moving company, and another 30,000 opted to learn how to hold a successful food drive. We won a generous AdWords Grant from Google which has helped us to drive more people to take action while managing it all from an incredible CRM generously donated by SalesForce. I know I’m geeking out a bit, but it’s technology that has enabled us to keep costs low and impact high!

Last year was also a year of relationship building: We welcomed several new partners to the Move For Hunger family including Bristol Global Mobility, Interconex, Arpin Van Lines, National Van Lines, Stevens Van Lines, Gentle Giant Moving Company, Redfin, and many other amazing partners. We also strengthened relationships with some of our top partners – Atlas Van Lines, Victory Packaging, and Brookfield Global Relocations. There are so many corporate partners that have been supporting our efforts for years through generous financial and in-kind donations; I can’t
even begin to thank you all for the support and enthusiasm you continue to show. You Guys Rock!

While 2015 was pretty freaking great, 2016 is going to be even better! We hope to organize more food drives and food rescue events than ever before. We also plan to have over 20 wrapped Move For Hunger trucks on the road by the end of this year – raising awareness about our mission in communities across North America. We’re planning to roll out a few new programs, add to our team and our board, and continue to put more food on the table for those struggling to find a meal. Thank you to everyone who made 2015 so amazing, and here’s to fighting hunger in 2016!
