Project Report | Oct 2, 2023
Mawas activities update from April to August 2023!

By Nico Hermanu | BOSF Fundraising Officer

In November 2022, the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation signed a collaboration agreement with Borneo Orangutan Survival Australia, Borneo Orangutan Survival United Kingdom and Borneo Orangutan Survival USA, for the Reforestation and Maintenance of a 100-hectare area in block A of the Mawas Conservation Area, which is valid for 30 months from October 2022 to March 2025.

This report is a progress of reforestation project activities for BOS US and UK in the period April-August 2023, include the following:

  • Seedlings maintenance in village nursery
  • Seedlings transport from village nursery to plantation area
  • Land and planting preparation:
    • Seedlings preparation and storage in temporary nursery in plantation area
    • Seedlings maintenance in plantation area
    • Procurement of planting stick/planting sign

Progress of Project ActivitiesOverview of the Project Progress

Several activities were conducted during April 2023-August 2023 for the BOS-US and BOS UK 40 Ha Reforestation Project including recurring seedlings maintenance both in village nursery and temporary nursery, seedlings transport to plantation area nursery, procurement of planting stick, plantation area setup, technical assistance, and several community meetings regarding reforestation implementation.

Seedlings maintenance in Village nursery

Intensive seedling maintenance in village nursery was conducted in April-May 2023, including regular watering, pest and disease control, and soil enrichment using organic fertilizer to ensure optimum seedlings growth.

Land and Planting Preparation

A series of activities were carried out as preparatory measures for the reforestation implementation. The activities are seedling preparation and storage in temporary nursery, procurement of planting sticks (ajir), reforestation group identification, and plantation area setups, including plantation line establishment and installation of plantation stick.

Seedlings preparation and storage in temporary nursery in plantation area

After the seedlings are transported to a temporary nursery in the plantation area, they receive intense care and maintenance, including regular watering, soil enrichment using organic fertilizer, pest and disease monitoring, as well as weeding and clearing dead leaves.

Based on the verification and observation process in the plantation nursery, by August 2023, the seedlings were in good condition, indicated by healthy green leaves, compact roots, and leaf sprouts emerging. The seedlings' height was 45-55 cm. Total of 48,906 seedlings from 5 different types were reportedly ready to be planted.

Procurement of planting stick/planting sign

A total of 48.880 planting sticks (ajir) are required for planting signs. The planting sticks were produced by 35 workers of 6 reforestation groups of Mantangai Hulu village, with a quota of 1,397 sticks for each worker. The planting stick procurement was completely provided by the worker by June 2023. After the verification process, the planting sticks were transported to the plantation area by wooden boat.

Reforestation Group Identification

In July 2023, reforestation group identification was conducted to ensure the even distribution of community participation in the reforestation activities. The community members who will participate in planting activities must come from different households, must provide ID cards, and don't comply with another working contract. There are 6 reforestation groups with a total of 53 members that will be the implementers of the planting activity, and the members are from Mantangai Hulu Village. These groups are combined from the project Reforestation of BOS US-UK and BOS Australia and will work in both projects.

Coordination Meeting

A meeting was conducted on August 2nd, 2023, in the Mawas Office Meeting Hall in Mantangai. The meeting was attended by 6 group leaders and representatives and mainly discussed technical things related to the implementation of reforestation and finance, including payment for the reforestation group. Minutes of the working agreement and commitment was provided by BOSF Mawas after the meeting was concluded.

Plantation Block Setup

In July 2023, the plantation block setup process was conducted. The plantation area of 40 Ha, located in Block M1 will be prepared for BOS US-UK Reforestation Project. The area will be divided into 6 main blocks for 6 groups and each group will have a 6.7 Ha working area. Considering that the plantation area is quite large, the area will be divided into 13 blocks to make the planting activities easier for the workers.

After dividing the plantation area, on August 12th, 2023, a technical briefing was provided to the reforestation group members regarding determining planting line and planting stick installation. After this, the  planting line establishment and planting stick installation was implemented.

Technical Assistance and Periodic Monitoring

The BOS Foundation Mawas Program conducted technical assistance and periodic monitoring during April-August 2023. The purpose of this was to monitor every activity that was conducted before planting implementation, and provide assistance if any problems arose. Technical assistance was conducted to make sure that each of the activities was carried out based on the technical guidance, and to check the seedlings and plantation condition before planting time.

Coordination Meeting Regarding Forest Fire Incidents and Dry Season

A coordination meeting was conducted on August 21st, 2023, as a response to forest and land fires that happened between August 18-20th, 2023. The meeting was held in the BOSF Mawas Office in Mantangai, and was attended by representatives of six groups. The meeting mainly gave an explanation and update of the fire incidents that had taken place in the BOSF Mawas working area. Due to the conditions in the dry season being unsuitable for the planting to be carried out, the attendees agreed that activities regarding planting preparation would be conducted only up tol planting line establishment and planting stick installation. The planting activity will be postponed due to the risk and impact from the dry season.
