Leeds Women's Aid Report November 2023

By Nik Peasgood | Chief Executive

Hello all,

We want to start by saying a huge thank you for all the support you’ve given to Leeds Women’s Aid.

Your continued support allows us to provide vital services to support women and families to live a life free from abuse and fear.

Children and Young People’s Hub

Over the past few months we have been working on our plans to build a new children and young people’s hub for families staying in our emergency refuge accommodation. The hub will allow young people to access specialist one to one support, group work and play activities to help them recover from the impact of domestic violence and abuse and build a brighter future.

We have planned a silent auction which will take place in November to raise funds for the hub and have been donated an array of brilliant items including signed shirts from professional sports teams, tickets to exclusive events, experience vouchers and much more. We want to say a big thank you to all the businesses and individuals that have kindly donated items for this important cause.

Working towards a safer city

Leeds Women’s Aid’s research and expertise has been central to the launch of a pilot safety app in Leeds which allows users to safely plan and share their journeys and location with friends. The app highlights safe venues and shows where taxi ranks and other transport hubs are. New reporting tools will be coming soon for reporting hate crime, sexual harassment and cat-calling.

Our work to help women live free from fear has been recognised as we were asked to be official charity partner at an event focused on businesses uniting to reduce crime and encourage female safety. One of our projects, a safe space bus for women on nights out, won ‘Outstanding Night Time Contribution to Female Safety’ at the awards.

Helpline shortlisted for national ‘helpline of the year’ award

Our 24/hour domestic abuse helpline has been shortlisted as one of the top seven helplines in the UK for a ‘Helpline of the Year’ award and our Team Leader of the Access and Assessment Team has been nominated for ‘Mentor of the Year’. This is a huge achievement and we are very proud of our team for their passion and dedication to providing outstanding support to people in need.
