The problem to address is poverty among survivors

By Kenneth | Fundarinsing Volunteer

The survivors of the flooding in Kinshasa continue to sink into poverty and no hope is coming for them

When you visit these affected places in Kinshasa the Democratic Republic of Congo, you will realize a clear social separation between the survivors of the flooding and the other members of the communities. The first think you will observe is the clear destitution and poverty among the survivors, the second the priorities in the struggle for surviving and the last is the opportunities they both may have.

Like other survivors of the disasters and flooding in DRC, those in Kinshasa have been left alone and the general perception was limited on urgent relief aid which was actually not enough and only limited to some few and does no longer exist.

We still believe that the best ways to support these survivors is helping them to start again rebuilding their lives through economic and livelihood activities. This dream has not yet been achieved and it is still far from being a reality. However we thank you for the generous contributions that have been so far donated towards this cause.

While we continue the mobilization of funds to support the survivors, we are also aware that a strong advocacy programme has be designed in order to the Democratic Republic of Congo come up with a prevention policy and programme at national levels.

While we may not fully protect all people from natural disaster we do observe the close relationship between poverty and vulnerability among survivors. The most vulnerable are especially those who were already too poor before the disaster or who did not have stable source of income. That is why we want to empower them economically.
