SACT Quarterly Update - Q1 2024

By Brian Courtenay - Chairman | SACT - 20240Q1 update - From the desk of Chairman

The Southern African Conservation Trust (SACT) had a quiet month in January 2024. We used this time to develop Phase 1 of our "Collar a Lion Program" to supply satellite tracking collars for lions living adjacent to the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. This aims to mitigate human-lion conflict and loss of livestock due to predation by lions. We launched Phase 1 of this project with our partners, Africa Geographic (A-G) in South Africa, using their various social media platforms and dedicated mailing lists to A-G subscribers. As a result, 20 collars were sponsored in quarter one, with 4 more to be sponsored in quarter two. We acquired a new donor/sponsor from Australia sponsoring 5 lion tracking collars and funding for 10,000 "lion educational comics" for rural schools located adjacent to national parks and other protected areas. Regarding our educational comics for rural schools, this quarter we have finalized the production of the new wild dog educational comic to be printed this quarter. We have also started planning the educational lion comic for our sponsors from Australia, to be completed next quarter and ready for printing with 10,000 copies to be distributed. We have raised funding for our "Educational Comic Program Re-Print Fund," and to date, we can fund a re-print of approximately 15,000 past publications. SACT was approached by one of South Africa's leading conservation NGOs to fund the lion tracking collars for the Kruger National Park. No decision has been made by SACT as contracts need to be signed. New auditors have been appointed to provide us with sets of accounts. We are preparing the production of the SACT News Update for the second quarter (April-June 2024), sourcing the news for publication in April 2024. This report was produced for GlobalGiving by the Southern African Conservation Trust – Brian Courtenay, Chairperson.
