Your Latest HeroDOGs Update!

By Emma Mortiboy | Public Fundraising

Detection Dog Team Leader Training
Detection Dog Team Leader Training

Hello and welcome to your latest update on APOPO’s HeroDOGs!

We are delighted to share that the HeroDOGs and deminers have officially been deployed in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, where they are actively detecting landmines and other explosives, helping to make the land safe again. After months of intensive training, the HeroDOG teams have begun real operations in one of the most mine-contaminated areas of the country. With the warmer spring weather allowing for safer conditions, their work has begun at a critical time.

The success of the HeroDOGs in Ukraine is thanks to a strong combination of local talent and international expertise. Some handlers have been trained locally in Ukraine, while others underwent intensive training in Cambodia at APOPO’s dog training facility during the winter months.

This blend of locally trained professionals, internationally trained handlers, and APOPO’s seasoned experts creates a highly effective team that is fully equipped to take on the challenges of demining in Ukraine. With this combination of skill and experience, the HeroDOG teams are expected to make a real and lasting impact in clearing land and restoring safety to the country.

At the beginning of this year, APOPO held an intensive Dog Team Leader training program in Siem Reap, Cambodia, bringing together handlers from APOPO's programs in Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Senegal and Ukraine. This three-week course focused on leadership development, advanced detection techniques, and field safety, preparing participants to take on more responsibility in mine detection operations.

The training emphasized the importance of effective teamwork and communication, essential skills when working in high-risk environments. By equipping handlers with the knowledge and confidence needed to lead detection teams, APOPO is strengthening its mission to clear landmines and other explosives efficiently and safely. This program ensures that the life-saving work of the HeroDOGs will continue for years to come.

Thank you for your continued support of our HeroDOGs. Your kindness and generosity means the world to us, to the HeroDOGs, and to the communities the HeroDOGs help protect. Every landmine detected brings families closer to safety and peace of mind, and that wouldn’t be possible without you.

With big thanks and best wishes,

The APOPO Team
