APOPO HeroTREEs - a Climate-Smart Solution

We are delighted to announce that a further 40 farmers are now part of the HeroTREEs project! Together, they will plant a total of 6,000 trees before the New Year.

20 farmers from the Choma Village have already prepared and sowed 1,000 tree pots. We expect that they will a further 2,000 during the next month. This will bring the total trees planted in the Choma Village to 3,000 before the end of the year.

We have 20 farmers from the Kisosa Village who have prepared 1,500 tree pots. Similarly to the Choma Village farmers, we have a target to reach 3,000 before the year is over.

Growing Success

As well as the new participants, we are also pleased to report on the successes of our ongoing participants

• 40 Farmers from Ruvuma and Mgambazi have already planted 4,300 trees. They will continue planting trees during small rainy season
• Tulo Village (20 farmers) have 2,500 trees which will be transplanted during the small rainy season
• Tulo Village has 250 Avocados and 250 Mangos which will be grafted. This exercise will take place this year

Growing Success

Thanks to your support, there are a further 3 nurseries with about 12,000 seedlings. These nursuries are located in Tulo and Ruvuma street (in Mlimani wards), and Mghambazi Street (In Magadu ward).

60 farmers are enrolled in the training program, with this number expected to grow. These farmers works in the Uluguru mountains in two wards, namely Mlimani and Magadu, which are the catchments of Morogoro River.

Benefitting Communities and the Environment

Your support has helped provide nutrition and education, that will result in sustainable income for the people involved, as well as benefitting their wider communities.

The project benefits the community living in the mountains as it provides tree species (fruits and other forest trees) that will be a good source of nutrition and income for the households.

Furthermore, the knowledge of Agroforestry they get through the education and training program will help farmers to improve yields of the associated crops.

The HeroTREEs project will have marked effect on improved water quality and quantity for the Morogoro town and beyond through Hydrological system maintenance and enhancement.  The presence of trees in the catchment of Morogoro River (Mlimani ward) play vital role in:

•  Rain water capture (increased rain)
•  Water conservation and Sustained water discharge from the catchment  (increasing water quantity in Morogoro River)

•  Sustained water table, flow of water springs, streams and Rivers (Increase quantity in Morogoro River)

• Erosion control (Improved water quality in Morogoro River)
