Thank you for your continued support of our High Dependency Unit over the past few months.
Since our last report, we have experienced our quietest season for puppies, with only 48 admitted to our High Dependency Unit (HDU) up until November. This is because dog mating season occurs from July to September so most of the puppies from the previous year had already reached maturity by then.
However, don’t be fooled into thinking that our time in the HDU was uneventful due to the lull in puppy arrivals. Our feline friends seized the chance to keep us on our toes, resulting in some hectic moments! We rescued numerous cats and kittens that needed the specialised care that our HDU provides. We estimate that we have assisted around 125 cats and kittens from July to November.
Puppy season kicked off at the end of November, and since then, we have been overwhelmed with tiny litters of puppies needing hand-rearing and intensive care. Additionally, we have rescued many puppies aged 4 to 8 weeks with injuries or illnesses. Over the 4 months of puppy season, we expect to see around 1,000 puppies coming through our gates, and so many of them will be in need of the intensive care that our HDU provides.
This year, we are hoping that the long-term effects of our ABC project will lead to a decrease in puppy numbers. Our recent dog count shows that 74% of dogs in Ajmer and 68% in Pushkar are sterilised. Research indicates that reaching 70% sterilisation means that we will have stabilised the population, allowing the death rate to exceed the birth rate, which will result in a natural and controlled reduction in population.
Your generous support makes all of this possible. Because of you, we can provide the extra special care these fragile patients deserve – thank you!
