Project Report | Nov 5, 2018
Fall medical camp and training report, Oct. 2018

By Soni KC Parajuli | Project Leader

Dear friends,

HHC's approach to improving the quality of life in rural Nepal consists of three vital pillar: healthcare, education an income generation. As part of healthcare services, HHC does not directly support the health posts but continues to monitor the activities of the health providers, maintain the standard of care as well as provide training, supply essential instruments and equipment, build infrastructure, and create sustainable means to support the local health posts.

Medical Camp in Sertung and Lapa in October 2018

HHC conducted fall medical camp from 2 to 13 October 2018 with financial support from Direct Relief International and 8 international physicians from USA and Canada. The team consisted of Drs. Robert McKersie, Sarah Cassel, Olayinka Edwards, Rachel Martin & Karren Leishman (family medicine) & Drs. Ashika Jain, Jessica Paulson and Pia Daniel (emergency room). The trek was led by Anil Parajuli and supported by Kulmani Basnet, Phe Dorji Tamang, Bin Thapa, Madhav KC, Buddha Tamang, Sushma Tamang, Bishnu Karki and the cook team led by Tshering Sherpa. 40 porters and 40 mules were used during the trek.

The medical team trekked over the high mountain passes from Parvatikunda to Shertung for three days and held camps at the villages of Sertung and Lapa. This trek features remote villages along the Tibetan border and give opportunities to see the beautiful mountains of the Ganesh, Langtang and Manasalu Himal. Altogether 425 patients were served with 43 patients referred to larger health facilities.

The major component of the trek is training local health providers in lifesaving skills as they help treat villagers from the surrounding areas with the assistance of HHC staff and local volunteers. Altogether 13 health providers from Tipling, Shertung and Lapa received training during the camp.

We are grateful to all our friends and donors who support our initiatives and make this possible.
