Sadness to Smiles: How Sonia and Sophiya Found Hope and a New Home
Sonia and Sophiya are two young sisters from the small mountain village of Phuleli in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. Today, they are safe, smiling, and doing well in school. But just a few years ago, their lives were filled with loss, fear, and uncertainty.
When the girls were still toddlers, their mother passed away. Their father was working as a porter in the Everest region, earning very little — less than $100 a month. After their mother died, he couldn’t even afford to pay for her funeral. With no other choice, he left Nepal to work in construction in Qatar, hoping to send money back home.
That decision left Sonia and Sophiya with no one to take care of them. Alone, and without a stable home or support, their future was at serious risk.
But everything changed when The Small World stepped in.
Thanks to the help of caring teachers and community members, the girls were brought to Himalayan Hope Home — The Small World's safe, loving home for girls in need.
At Himalayan Hope Home, Sonia and Sophiya found more than just shelter. They found a new family. They received school supplies, tuition, healthy food, emotional support, and most importantly — a chance to dream again.
Growing, Learning, and Dreaming
Sonia is now 10 years old and in Grade 6. She’s one of the top students in her class and dreams of becoming a doctor one day. She says she wants to help people in need, just like The Small World helped her.
Sophiya, now 8, is also doing incredibly well in school. She’s at the top of her class and shares her sister’s dream of becoming a doctor. Although she doesn’t remember her mother well, she says she feels deeply loved by her Nini (grandmother) and her father, who has now returned home.
Their story is a powerful reminder that with love, education, and support — even the most difficult lives can be transformed.
Thank You for Being Part of This Journey
Sonia and Sophiya say thank you to The Small World and all the kind supporters who helped them find a new beginning.
And we thank you — our friends, volunteers, and donors — for making this life-changing work possible. With your continued support, Himalayan Hope Home will remain a safe space where girls can heal, grow, and build bright futures.
Help Their Dreams Come True
There are many more girls like Sonia and Sophiya who are still waiting for safety, education, and hope.
If you weren’t here to support The Small World — and if The Small World hadn’t been there for Sonia and Sophiya — their story could have ended very differently.
Without this support, they would almost certainly be out of school today. Even worse, they might have been forced to work as domestic laborers, face abuse, or suffer from illness and neglect. Their lives could have been full of pain, fear, and hopelessness.
But because of you, Sonia and Sophiya now have a chance to grow up with dignity, peace of mind, and big dreams for the future.
Your support is not just changing lives — you are saving them.
