The communities we work in also are high burden and risk areas for malaria. While much of Swaziland is considered low or no risk, Maphiveni, Vuvulane and Mafecula are the focal points for malaria treatment. Many of the patients we treat in these communities already have weakened immune systems: especially if they are newly initiated on treatment for HIV. An added disease burden may be more than some can carry.
We are consultation with the Swaziland National Malaria Control Programme to add malaria testing and treatment services both from our mobile clinic and in door-to-door campaigns. Several times it has happened that our staff and volunteers living in Vuvulane will be tested for malaria as part of the eradication programs. If we can do our part and provide an additional level of constant in-community testing and treatment, then this will be one less risk that an already weakened population will have to contend with.
