Living on the edge of the cane fields in Swaziland can be hard. A combination of poverty, lack of clean water and prevalence of diseases take their toll. One mother struggles to survive here. Surrounded by poverty, suffering abuse from her husband, she also has to struggle to stay healthy. Alcoholism takes its toll. Living with HIV and the constant battle to remain TB free adds to the daily struggle. Without access to medical care and a support group, her story would have been cut short years ago.
As part of the CHIPS programme, she receives medical care in her community and also the opportunity to travel to the closest hospital if necessary. As support, the CHIPS staff provide encouragement and counselling to help her deal with the struggles she faces to remain healthy. Even access to skills and training is provided. All with the hope of alleviating the pressures of poverty and abuse.
Velelaphi has come al long way. In her own words (translated from siSwati) “I would have been dead and my children would not have survived if it was not for CHIPS and the care and hope they gave me”.
Your support ensures Velelaphi and many just like her have hope in a forgotten part of Swaziland.
