Homeless Project, Puducherry

By S.M. Arasu | Founder Director

Summary Prime Trust is trying to help those living in the shadows of society in Pondicherry. Our long term goal to establish a shelter home for the homeless and to provide them services to improve their quality of life. This home will provide empowerment, counselling, de-addiction and vocational training to help these individuals transition from a life of poverty to integrated members of our society. Challenge The challenges for this community are that they raise their children on the streets and their income is picking up rags in the trash bins. The male members are addict to alcohol, unable to raise their wards on par with other members of the society. The children do not get education and follow their parents. Their lack of financial resources, education and home stability result in them living in cycles of poverty and homelessness. Solution Since, the inception of this project in 2017, we are aiming to support 10 homeless women with children at our Homeless Centre. The women will get supports such as counselling, domestic violence protection, de-addiction and rehabilitation support. We will also arrange access to vocational training and micro-credit opportunities to help them achieve financial stability. Children will be provided proper education and access to any of the evening schools of Prime Trust. Long-Term Impact To empower and support these individuals reintegrate into society without having to live on the streets. Updates Prime Trust with its team supports the individuals by providing awareness education on Saturdays provides counseling, support the children with school supplies. The children are motivated to attend evening remedial classes at our center. Updates Miss. Asha Autur, a volunteer from the Netherlands who was the key person to initiate this project visited and interacted with the community few weeks ago. The children were given stationary and women are motivated to attend our tailoring classes. Additional Documentation This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx).
