You have very generously helped us feed the formerly homeless young people who live at our shelter in Tbilisi. This gives them a valuable breathing space, a chance to receive training or look for work, to find stability and start to rebuild their lives.
Even while they are with us, we are keen that all our residents share responsibility and develop the good habits that will allow them to live successful independent lives. We are very pleased with new developments this summer, which will help all our residents and one of our families in particular take those steps towards standing on their own feet.
First of all this spring we decided not to plant a garden, but to keep animals in our yard. So we now have two pigs and chickens, one of which had six chicks. Our residents are helping to look after the animals, and they will help feed us. This is good training in particular for those of our youngsters who will end up living in the countryside.
One of our families is looking forward to just such a move. You might remember that we reported on a generous gift a local supporter made donating a house to two of our families. We found out from these families that there is a shack for sale in the same village for just $3,000. A family who live at our shelter and who have four children decided to buy it. We talked to the buyer and discovered that they could pay in installments. We got a contract made up that commits the couple to paying for the house over two years. They will continue to live with us during that time so that they can afford to pay for it. The house comes with 600 square metres of land where they will be able to grow food and raise animals. The village has reasonably developed infrastructure and good transport to the city. When the time comes we will help the family move there. We hope to be able to help them with renovation costs.
Thank you very much for helping our residents so that they are able to save up for their future village life.
