We have always continued to take an interest in our residents after they leave our shelter. We aim to help them find stability, even if they will never be rich. Stability is something we have all been lacking in the last year. Our food parcels have been even more welcome than usual as many of our families have lost employment and income.
We have distributed food parcels with all the basics not just in Tbilisi itself, but also to families who moved out to surrounding villages.
As you know, we most of the people we help are young, but today I wanted to share a touching story of an older man who found himself on the streets after a tragedy.
This man had worked as a driver and lived with his wife. That was until his house burned to the ground. The fire also took his wife's life. He struggled to cope, started to drink and lost his job. This is how he ended up on the streets.
He continued to drink there, but he was still a very kind man. During the day he would beg, and at night he would share food with the children and protect them. Naturally, this lifestyle took a toll on his health, he became ill and could no longer walk. The children asked us to help their friend.
We asked the shelter at Dzegvi St George's monastery to take him in two years ago. Since then, the children have often visited him with us. Whenever we can we take him incontinence pads, special food, medicines and clothes.
Far from being hardened by their life on the streets, our young people continue to impress us with their compassion.
Thank you for helping us and them bring comfort and relief to their friend and to our former residents at this difficult time.
