Community Health and Wellness

By Shondra Muhammad | Deputy Executive Director

Since our last update, we learned that instead of 2 families experiencing homelessness, there were actually 4. We are so happy to report that we have been able to substantially assist 2 of the families in obtaining more permanent housing. One of the families has also moved into temporary housing, but we will continue to work with them to find a more sustainable solution. And, one of the families is still in the same situation, in which there are additional mental wellness challenges.

In our effort to further support the community’s access to affordable health care, we have partnered with Harris Health Systems to provide on-site health care access through telemedicine. We have converted one of our facility rooms into a private office where community members will be able to attend virtual doctor’s appointments; schedule, review, and transfer lab work; and find pertinent medical research and information. We will be the only community center providing this type of connection between the community and their various health care providers, and we hope to serve as a model to ensure that all communities are able to receive needed care without barriers.

Additionally, we have partnered with a couple of mental wellness organizations to provide the community with free seminars focusing on topics such as depression, anxiety in parenting, coping mechanisms, dementia, and trauma. Another partner will host an upcoming community health fair to provide CPR training, self-defense instruction, youth mentor, and more.
