Preventing HPV in Mali

By Anja Schneider | GAIA Vaccine Foundation Volunteer

Human papillomavirus, more commonly known as HPV, is a virus that causes cervical cancer. HPV and cervical caner are very preventable if given access to vaccinations. However, in developing countries such as Mali  access to proper access to vaccination is poor. In fact, the HPV vaccine remains unavailable in Mali. Therefore, despite the possibility to be prevented, cervical cancer is a prevalent disease in the Malian community that claims too many lives.

One of the primary missions of GAIA Vaccine Foundation is to reduce the incidence of infectious disease that disproportionately affects the underserved. We also work to promote the development of globally accessible vaccine knowledge and obtainability. The HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention for West Africa project works to specifically to advocate for the availability of HPV vaccie in Mali.

The HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention for West Africa project is also working to lead the distribution of HPV vaccinations. This will in turn lower the mortality rate for women dying of cervical cancer, something caused by HPV infections. By leading the charge in increasing education and awareness of HPV and cervical cancer, this project is aimed to save thousands of innocent lives from the infection. For just $10, you can provide a potentially life saving cervical cancer screening and printed cloth for one woman. For $25, you would be supplying cervical cancer screening supplies for 5 women. These life saving donations give young women the safe and healthy lives they deserve.
