Thank you for your continued support of Farmed Animal welfare. We are pleased to share exciting news with you! Bill C-355, The Prohibition of Export of Horses by Air for Slaughter Act, passed its third reading in the House of Commons on May 9th.This is another step forward in banning the inhumane practice, as the bill will now move forward to be considered by the Senate. Bill S-270, whose intent was to address the same issue, has now been dropped so that all efforts to implement the ban can be consolidated.
Since 2013, more than 40,000 horses have been exported from Canada to Japan for human consumption. Over 2,000 of these horses have been flown to their death since September 2021, despite the Prime Minister issuing a mandate calling on the federal Minister of Agriculture to ban this practice in December 2021.
Humane Canada has been advocating on your behalf and just recently, our CEO Barbara Cartwright spoke in Parliament about the need to focus on the experience of the horses, who because of this practice, suffer anxiety, fear and pain, all the way up to death. Update on our work at the National Farm Animal Care Council
Our work at the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) continues, and now, a new round of code updates is getting started. As a crucial first step in the code update, NFACC ran surveys for all parties interested in providing their top-of-mind thoughts on farmed animal welfare.This process started in April with the Beef Cattle and Equine codes. Humane Canada shared the respective surveys on our social media channels and through our mailing list. The process for the other codes (pig, sheep and poultry) is expected to start soon.
Humane Canada will dedicate its efforts to the Equine and Pig Code in 2024. We have carefully selected animal welfare experts in these species to work closely with our organizational team. This focused approach reassures our commitment to advocating for continuous improvements in the care and management of Canada's more than half a million horses and 21 million pigs.
