Advancing Welfare through Action: April 2026 Update

By Giuliana Miguel Pacheco | Manager, Farmed Animal Welfare

Hello, thank you for your continued support of Farmed Animal Welfare in Canada.  At Humane Canada, our ongoing engagement with the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) remains a cornerstone of our mission. As we move through 2026, we continue to advocate for tangible policy changes grounded in welfare science. With over 800 million animals at the heart of our food system, we are working tirelessly to ensure the Codes of Practice reflect both modern ethics and the high standards Canadians expect.

Our work has been marked by several significant milestones:

  • Strategic Advocacy at the Table: Our farmed animal welfare expert has been working side-by-side with our Code representatives during intensive in-person and online meetings. Together, they have developed a unified strategy to navigate the complexities of the NFACC process, aiming to secure long-term advances in animal protection.
  • Formal Submission for Equine Welfare: A comprehensive review and evaluation of the draft Equine code by our farmed animal welfare expert supported the official submission that called for stronger, measurable requirementsmoving beyond vague suggestions to ensure horses have mandatory access to the resources they need to thrive, such as daily turnout and social interaction.
  • Amplifying Member Voices: True advocacy is a collective effort. We collaborated closely with our member organizations to ensure our submissions for the Equine Code directly reflect the specific concerns and values of our broad network of animal welfare supporters across the country.
  • Preparing for the Beef Cattle Code: With the Beef Cattle Code public comment period approaching, we are finalizing our technical reviews and educational materials. This is a critical window to address key issues like thermal stress, shelter, and painful procedures, and we are preparing to lead the way in securing more progressive standards.
  • Investing in Expert Leadership: Effectiveness at the negotiation table requires specialized skill. We continue to provide advanced training and support to our team of welfare experts, empowering them to advance farmed animal welfare during high-level Code deliberations.
  • Leading the Conversation for Farmed Animals at the Summit for Animals: Our farmed animal welfare expert is leading the Farmed Animal Welfare track at this year’s Summit for Animals again. By bringing the latest research and advocacy education to the forefront, the track fosters a more informed and united community of advocates dedicated to the future of farmed animal welfare.

With your continued support, Humane Canada remains the leading voice for animals at the decision-making table. Your contributions allow us to bring science, transparency, and accountability to the national stage, shaping the standards that will define the lives of millions of farmed animals for the next decade. Thank you for your continued kindness toward farmed animals.
