“I never believed we could farm fish in Karamoja.”
These were the words whispered by one of our community partners, his eyes wide with a mix of awe and disbelief as he cradled a bag of tiny, wriggling tilapia fry. For generations, Karamoja, a region scarred by harsh droughts and chronic food insecurity, has been a place where survival is a daily struggle. A place where a dream like a fish farm seemed like a fantasy.
But this May, that fantasy became a reality.
From Emergency Aid to Lasting Empowerment
Our journey in Karamoja didn't start with fish. It started with basic food distribution, an essential but temporary fix for families on the brink. We knew that to create lasting change, we had to do more. We had to provide tools for self-sufficiency. So, we introduced advanced agricultural training, helping families grow more resilient crops in the arid soil.
Now, thanks to the incredible generosity of donors like you, we have taken the next bold step: aquaculture.
This hasn't been easy. Our path to this milestone was fraught with challenges that tested our resolve. We faced setbacks that would have been easy to surrender to: a technical expert who backed out, a key local staff member lured away, and frustrating delays from a farm contractor. Just days before the launch, one of our vehicles got stuck in the mud, leaving us stranded and wondering if this day would ever come.
But the spirit of the Karamoja people, and our commitment to them, never wavered. Yesterday, pushing through every obstacle, we finally released the first batch of tilapia into the newly established pond. Seeing the community members, some still skeptical, but many with newfound excitement, rally together to welcome this new beginning was a powerful reminder of why we do this work.
Why This Fish Farm is More Than Just Fish
This project is a cornerstone for a healthier, more prosperous future in Karamoja. It’s a game-changer that will:
Fight Malnutrition: Introduce a crucial and desperately needed source of protein into the local diet, helping children grow strong and healthy.
Create Sustainable Income: The sale of surplus fish in the market will create a new, reliable stream of income for families, allowing them to afford healthcare, school fees, and other essentials.
Build Climate Resilience: By integrating aquaculture with our existing irrigation agriculture programs, we are creating a smarter, more sustainable system for food production in a changing climate.
Your Support is Needed Now More Than Ever
This first pond is a beacon of hope, but it's just the start. The "unbelievable" has happened, and now we must seize this momentum. The community is energized and ready to learn, but we need your help to keep the project thriving and expanding.
Your donation today can make a tangible, life-changing impact:
$15 can purchase 100 more tilapia fry to stock another family's pond.
$45 can provide a month's supply of high-quality fish feed, ensuring the fish grow healthy and strong.
$100 can fund an advanced training session for a group of new farmers on pond management and sustainable harvesting techniques.
