Second Harvest's Hurricane Ida Relief Work

By Amelia Whittington | Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer

Nearly two years have passed from the date Hurricane Ida hit Southeast Louisiana, but many of our neighbors are still feeling the effects of this devastating storm. Continued inflation and supply chain issues have complicated recovery efforts for both individuals and organizations. We continue increased levels of service in the hardest-hit areas of Lower Jefferson, Lafourche, and Terrebonne Parishes in the Bayou, and the River Parishes of St. Charles and St. John. While most of our partner agencies in these locations have been able to reopen, the majority of those suffered devastating damage and losses impacting their operations. Thanks to the support of donors, we have been able to provide essential items to these partners to rebuild their capacity, such as refrigerators, freezers, shelving, laptops, and more. These items will not only help their recovery efforts, but also better prepare them for future storms.

We are grateful to have made it through the 2022 hurricane season without a major event impacting our South Louisiana service area, but remain prepared to serve our neighbors in the event of a natural disaster. The 2023 hurricane season is now upon us, and we continue to work on preparing the entirety of our South Louisiana service area for potential severe weather events. August - November are considered the peak months of hurricane season, and Second Harvest is ready to serve our neighbors in the event of a natural disaster.

Thank you for your support!
