Keeping Girls in School

By Stephanie Bowers | Project Leader

It’s unfortunate but it happens: young girls in Puerto Rico whose parents are unable to afford period products resort to stealing in order to supply for their basic need

Among those is theft of period products.

Period products, like diapers, are an often overlooked necessity that people living in poverty struggle to afford. In Puerto Rico, for example, where the poverty rate is an astonishing 43.5% according to United States Census Bureau data, many households struggle to afford basic needs. Period products cannot be obtained with SNAP or WIC benefits, and many people simply do not think of the need when making in-kind donations to local organizations.

The need is ongoing, every month people living in poverty face difficult decisions on how to spend a limited income. Meeting the basic need for period products can help restore dignity and keep girls in school.

Another bonus? When we supply cloth period products to school age kids in need, we completely eliminate the financial burden of this basic hygiene supply.

“I had an avalanche of schools asking me to give orientation and pads,” said Loraine, a Puerto Rico mom who distributes donations for Jake’s Diapers. “Parents asked for them. Cloth helped them. Also, since many girls reduced their pain and menstrual symptoms with cloth, they could concentrate better and go to school.”

Thanks for your support in helping school age kids in Puerto Rico continue their education, and lift themselves out of poverty. Every little step truly makes a difference towards hindering hardship. I encourage you to reach me at stephanie@jakesdiapers.org with any questions you may have. I'd love to hear from you.
