Mushrooms for Sale

By Candelaria Sut | Project Manager

Josefa with part of their first crop.
Josefa with part of their first crop.

The women of Chumanzana are very happy!  This month they have harvested their first crop of mushrooms and are starting their next!.

With the sale of ten pounds of mushrooms, they have been able to buy seeds and other materials to continue their mushroom growing.  They are happy because they have had success with their project.  It is a satisfaction for each one of them.

Following are the opinions of some:

María Q says that with the sale of the mushrooms, she has been able to buy seeds to begin again.  It is a great help because only in this way can she grow her business The materials are easy to get because she can save the corncobs and only needs to buy the seeds.  Before she didn't know she could use the corncobs to grow mushrooms, so she burnt them for wood.

Maria M. says that the business of selling mushrooms  is very interesting because it is an activity that generates a profit.  This helps her improve her life.  Some of her neighbors bought her mushrooms and she was able to buy more seeds and she has started to save the corncobs to make the cakes to grow the mushrooms. Thanks to the Kateri Fund and all the people who are continuing to help with the project, she and her neighbors are able to improve their lives.  The project has given them much new knowledge and she likes the business of selling mushrooms.

Candelaria says that it is a beautiful experience.  She has never before seen the cakes of mushrooms.  It is a marvel when the mushrooms appear and the form the cakes take.  What she likes most is the harvest.  It excites her to start a new crop, so there will always be a harvest.  With the profit, she is able to buy more seeds and materials to continue.

As you can see from the women's comments, they are not only excited by the project now, but are looking to the future and the impact the project can have on their lives.
