Exclusive Breastfeeding Saves Lives

In August 2024, the lively community of Kukubuso in Ghana's Ashanti Region joined the world in celebrating Global Exclusive Breastfeeding Week. The normally quiet streets burst into life as residents came together to promote a cause close to their hearts: giving every child the healthiest start through exclusive breastfeeding.

The celebration kicked off with a colorful parade that wound through Kukubuso and neighboring villages. Drums beat rhythmically as people waved banners bearing the powerful message, "Exclusive breastfeeding saves lives." The float wasn't just a spectacle; it was a heartfelt effort to educate families about the critical importance of exclusively breastfeeding children during their first 1,000 days of life, a time essential for proper growth and long-term health.

Following the float, the community gathered for a special ceremony attended by local chiefs, community leaders, and health workers. Their presence underscored a shared commitment to supporting mothers and children. The leaders spoke passionately about how caring for the youngest members of society is a collective responsibility that strengthens the entire community.

The highlight of the event was a stirring speech by a well-known nutritionist dedicated to child health. He spoke in simple, relatable terms about the essential food groups—fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy, and proteins—and how they contribute to a balanced diet. He emphasized that exclusive breastfeeding provides all these nutrients naturally during a child's first 1,000 days, protecting them from illnesses and supporting strong mental and physical development.

The ceremony also featured inspiring testimonies from mothers who had practiced exclusive breastfeeding and witnessed its benefits firsthand. Their stories resonated deeply, encouraging other mothers to feel confident and supported in making the same choice for their children.  The Kukubuso community remains actively involved in Self-Help International’s Growing Healthy Food, Growing Healthy Children (GHFGHC) program and is deeply thankful for its presence.

Today, Kukubuso has embraced a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive from the very beginning.
