We are working on being a qualified volunteers

By Summer&Jennica&Xiaolu | Executive Director

On November 14, 2021, 27 college student volunteers from all over China gathered in Guangzhou to learn and grow in order to better play the role of a growth teacher and serve left-behind children in mountainous areas.

Since our service objects are all minors, it is essential to improve the service knowledge and skills of volunteers. Combined with the characteristics of the service, we bring the CBO theory of resilience, ethical principles of youth service, positive discipline and teaching skills to the volunteers to help them lay a solid foundation for the future of volunteer education service.

Sharlin Lu, the facilitator of the training, compared us to tumblers, hoping that we can all have the constitution of a tumbler -- no matter what external blows to it, even if it falls down, it can get up. She explains the CBO theory of resilience (sense of efficacy, sense of belonging, and sense of optimism) from simple to profound.

Facilitator Jennica Li, through a combination of games and theory, vividly led everyone to learn how to be a kind and firm educator, how to use positive discipline tools such as encouragement, positive language and 3A checklist. Some volunteers said that they would feel annoyed when they meet naughty children and do not know how to deal with them. Positive discipline subverts their understanding of education and helps them better understand what children think and how to encourage others. Moreover, it is also very useful in daily interpersonal communication.

Another facilitator,Summer Tan, led volunteers to think about how team culture can help organizations by leading experiential games. Participants engaged in intense discussions and were impressed by the importance of a safe, reliable, and friendly team culture, knowing the word "team" in its true sense.

We hope that every "Star" can gain profound friendship and knowledge from this training, improve themselves, and become more confident and capable to participate in volunteer service.

Let us work together to realize the vision of Shining Star: We help children and young people to feel loved, confident, positive, and develop into well balanced person, and pass on the love and hope to others.
