Children's Growth Story

By Fanyi Meng | Program Volunteer

Little snail, the outside world is very warm In every year's Summer Camp, we will meet all kinds of children, some of them are small hedgehogs which are enthusiastic but naughty; some are mimosa which are very shy, often blushing before speaking. However, Pingping, the protagonist of today's story, was a small snail kind. Because she always seems like very closed, lazy and silent. She was a kid that let us felt very hard to open her locked heart door at first. The hard shell of the little snail The first time I met Pingping, her big watery eyes were filled not with excitement but with... Numb? Pingping looked small and lonely compared to the other children who participated in the program. Whether it is dance class or resilience class, Pingping always behaves a little negatively, she never takes the initiative to raise her hand to answer questions. In the face of the teacher's encouragement, Pingping will only slightly lower her head, look at the ground with her beautiful big eyes, and then quietly shake her head with her mouth. She rarely spoke, rarely smiled, and was more like a little transparent trying to hide herself, and "silence" became the key word when volunteers mentioned her. We tried to become good friends with Pingping, but she always habitually refused, refused the opportunity to take the initiative to express, refused the kindness given by the teachers, refused all new things. We do not know what she has experienced, but perhaps the hard shell can feel the security from the heart. In the home visit day, only Pingping herself at home, "little snail" is still silent and so quietly do her homework, while the volunteers also learned that Pingping is a very good and thoughtful girl at home, and grandma is the only family accompanying her. The little snail learned to nod The shell of the little snail is hard, but the constant love is warm. In the resilience class, the teachers constantly sent Pingping invitations, encouraging her to raise her hand. Pingping from the first show of no care slowly turned into a smile, shy shake of the head. On the third day of the art class, the teacher encouraged her to write some feelings in the dairy, when waiting for the teacher to go away and she wrote: "The teachers gave us two classes today, I feel the teachers are very tired." Maybe it was the first time to smile at Pingping, maybe it was the second time to greet Pingping, maybe it was the third time to encourage Pingping to answer questions... No one knows exactly at which moment the little snail decided to come out to see, but we began to be surprised to find that Pingping slowly began to express her inner feelings to us, although more often Pingping would only smile at the teacher shyly, but she began to no longer just drop her eyes and shake her head, and sometimes she would nod her head with a smile in her big eyes. The little snail came out of her shell The eighth morning of the resilience class, Pingping slightly raised her hand to answer the question. But unfortunately the teacher did not see at that time. But when the class was over and the teachers asked Pingping: "Did you raised your hand just now?" Pingping said yes! And she agreed with the teacher in the afternoon course, she will bravely raise her hands to answer questions. In the afternoon class, Pingping successfully answered the questions with the teacher's encouragement! On the day of evaluation, Pingping said she was very happy, thanks to the teacher's encouragement ~ It was the eighth day of the Summer Camp, and it was the last day for Pingping to come to class, and also the first day for the little snail to come out of her shell. There are maybe many small snails like Pingping, and the driving force to guide them to "come out and see" must be able to be perceived care and encouragement, love and warmth. Small snails have their own time to grow up, do not violently break her shell to peep at her softness. Please believe that they will one day become their own little hero!!
