We are at the earliest stage of our project to improve healthcare throught technology in Burundi. The technical team of The Village Microclinic is working hard and conduct regular community outreaches to identify the root causes of lack of access to healthcare services in underserved communities of Burundi. The working team of The Village Microclinic is made of 2 IT engineers, 2 medical doctors,3 nurses, 1 lab technician and 2 community health workers. They are conducting the initial assessment and feasibility of this project.
2 main areas are being analysed:
1. Through focus groups, the community has expressed their point of view about the main causes and factors that limit their access to health care. Lack of health facilities and qualified personnel have been among the main reasons that prevent them to have access to health services as well as long distances to be walked on foot to reach the nearest health facility.
2. Health practitioners have pointed out that they are overwhelmed by the number of people that come to them. Some of the patients come to them at a later stage when it's no longer possible to save them. They have suggested that if there could be a better way of receiving those patients at an early stage that could be of great interest.
IT experts are currently working on those ideas to design a cloud-based technology which is suitable for Burundi and the needs of patients.
