Braving The Weather To Embrace Peace

By Nancy Njeri | Project Principle

Peace procession Walk
Peace procession Walk

The 3rd annual Wasichana Wacheze (Let Girls play) Top 8 football tournament finals came at a time when Kenya was entangled in a political turmoil and presidential election crossroads. As a warm up and to set up a peaceful atmosphere, all the eight schools that advanced to the finals of Wasichana Wacheze including their teachers, coaches and community members took part in a peace procession walk in the streets of various estates and slum areas which are perceived to be hotbeds of violence. The teams took advantage of all the football skills and equipments at their disposal including whistles, banners and placards with peace messages to send a word of PEACE across the communities.

 Let The Games Begin

After the procession walk, all the eight girl teams assembled at Jericho community grounds for the knock-out matches and finals played under the theme of ‘Embracing peace, love and unity to empower girls through football’. This was the culmination of the Wasichana Wacheze football league that ran for 6 months in various schools and community centres with sixteen teams on board. During the league period, girls are normally taken through learning lessons on sexual health reproductive and rights by various VAP Mrembo coaches in their respective schools and community Mrembo chapters.

We Still Need Your Help

A couple of months ago VAP has been engaged in a vigorous local online fundraising campaign through the YETU initiative towards supporting its Employability and Entrepreneurship project that strives to  economically empower graduates of  Mrembo (Girls ) programs. So far the fundraising has raised Kes 116,605 and counting. In this regard team VAP really appreciates the unwavering support it continues to receive from different and generous supporters, partners and well-wishers who have committed themselves with monetary and in-kind donation. However, our eyes are still on the ball to reach the target of Kes, 500,000 by December which will result to a matching fund from YETU.The fundraising is still on and this is how to do it:Go on to Global Giving platform or if you’re in Kenya, go to: Go to MPESA, select lipa na M-PESA, Enter pay bill 891300, Account VTC.To donate on Airtell: Go to Airtel Money, select Make Payments, paybill, other Business Name MCHANGA, Reference VTC
