TheFriends Liberia-Liberia Health Team (FOL-LHT) with support from the Friends of Liberia-USA (FOL-USA), GlobalGiving, and Global Health Ministries conducted its fifth continuing professional development (CPD) workshop from 8-12 January 2024 on the compound of the Phebe-Esther Bacon College of Health Sciences in Suakoko, Bong County, Liberia.

Goal and Objectives

Our goal behind the CPD workshop in the context of nursing/midwifery education and clinical practices in Liberia is to support and maintain healthcare professionals’ competencies at the level sufficient enough to enable nurses and midwives to provide quality and evidence-informed healthcare services over the next ten years.

The Objectives for the 2024 CPD Workshops included:

For the Nursing/Midwifery Faculty; The participants will:

  1. Construct different types of test items using a test blue print
  2. Demonstrate understanding of test items analysis
  3. Explain contents of a test bank
  4. Explain the use of artificial intelligence in nursing/midwifery education
  5. Distinguish between politics and policies in nursing and midwifery

For the practicing nurses and midwives; The participants will:

  1. Explain how to handle ethical issues in nursing and midwifery practice settings using the ethical decisions making process.
  2. Explain how to develop clinical sites that will enhance student’s clinical competencies
  3. Understand how to write a nursing/midwifery report that is clear and concise.

 Participants

As with previous workshops, there were two cadres of healthcare providers who were invited and participated in the 2024 CPD workshops: There were 20 nursing/midwifery faculty recommended by their deans/directors of nursing/midwifery training institutions accredited by the Liberian Board for Nursing/Midwifery (LBNM) and 21 practicing nurses/midwives recommended by their supervisors or nursing directors of accredited hospitals. At the end of each workshop i.e. faculty and practicing nurses and midwives, participant were encouraged to roll out in their respective institutions what they have learned during the workshop. We have learned through one of our WhatsApp social medial platforms that a few of the participants have already conducted in-service workshops at their institutions.

The Roles of Key Nursing/Midwifery Stakeholders

As partners in the education of nurses/midwives, the Registrar of the LBNM did a presentation aimed at reinforcing faculty knowledge and skill regarding their roles during the Board’s assessments for accreditation. The presidents of the Liberian Nurses and Midwifery Associations respectively spoke to their association members on the progress made and the ways moving forward. The Chief Nursing/Midwifery Officer expressed high appreciation to the Friends of Liberia-USA, GlobalGiving, and Global Health Ministries for all the support they have provided FOL-LHT to improve the quality of nursing and midwifery in Liberia. She reemphasized that; very soon, re-licensure will be based on credits obtained from attending a Continuing Professional Development workshop.

Our Participation, with Support from FOL-USA, in the Fire Disasters in Totota, Bong County

As the citizens of Bong County and Liberians as a whole, were reeling from the gas tank explosion in Totota, Bong County on 26-December 2023, the FOL-US provided funds in the amount of $2,500 to purchase needed drugs and medical supplies for the Totota fire disaster victims that were admitted at the Phebe Hospital. With these funds, the FOL-LHT purchased and delivered to the Phebe Administration on behalf of FOL-USA the following items: Seventy oxygen-filled Cylinders, 10 bags of washing soap, 10 cartoons of bleach, and four cartoons of gloves. These items were formally presented to the Medical Director of the hospital who extended thanks and appreciation to the FOL-USA

Dissemination

During the workshops we invited one reputable online News Paper to cover our 5th CPD workshop. The objective was to disseminate our activities to the healthcare communities both locally and internationally. Please see the link below.

In conclusion, the FOL-LHT has been the working force through which the FOL-US, GlobalGiving, and the Global Health Ministries have helped the LBNM and Ministry of Health in Liberia to augment their efforts in improving the quality of healthcare through CPD workshops. At FOL-LHT, we are proud that we have been supported by our donors to provide these valuable services in our country. As CPD is a continuing process, we ask our donors to continue to support us as we implement CPD throughout Liberia based on our ongoing needs assessment.
