Our project to improve the quality of education at 6 schools in Balkh has recently started. In this update, we provide you with details about the progress.
Construction work and school committees
The contract with the construction company has been signed so that the maintenance and repair work can now begin.
A central component of the project is the active involvement of the school development committees. The first network meeting took place in March with five members from each of the six schools. Together, the participants analyzed the opportunities and challenges of their schools and developed initial solutions. The meetings not only promote exchange, but also strengthen cohesion between the schools and commitment to long-term improvement of the school environment.
In May, a six-day leadership and management workshop was held for school management teams, with two representatives from each school taking part. The gender-segregated implementation ensured that female managers were also able to take part. Among other things, the practical training strengthened skills in time management, communication, strategy development and conflict resolution.
Focus on mental health
Psychosocial support services are becoming increasingly important in Afghanistan, especially for girls. Girls are directly affected by the Taliban government's restrictions on education, among other things, and at the same time there is a lack of low-threshold contact points for mental health. To counter this double burden, counseling centers are being set up at the project's two girls' schools. Two experienced psychologists have already been hired and they have developed concepts to be able to support the schoolgirls on site, having started in June.
