Thank you so much for supporting the ongoing work of Child Rescue Nepal.
This latest report from our colleagues in Kathmandu brings good news of recent rescues and prevention work, as well as the ongoing need for school reconstruction work following 2015 Earthquakes.
Two Rescues
In November and December 2017 we rescued four young boys from a restaurant, and two boys from a helium balloon factory. All were undertaking dangerous work where they were working long hours for a few pence, and sustaining injuries. The youngest boy rescued was just aged 10. Two of the boys were safely reunited with their families within a few days, whilst the remaining boys are in our safe house whilst we trace their families and assess their home situations.
School Reconstruction
We have completed reconstruction projects in 22 allocated schools. We are delighted to report that we have recently received a reward for this work from the Nepal Reconstruction Authority - you helped us to achieve this. However, there are still many more schools in need of classroom reconstruction, drinking water, toilets and other repairs and we are in the process of being allocated more schools.
Keeping children safe in school
80% of trafficking victims in Nepal have never been to school, so we strengthen schools to keep children safe in school. We recently distributed bursaries and 143 winter jumpers to children at Sundari Kali Primary School in the trafficking-prone district of Makwanpur. Each year we fund over 600 bursaries and support over 40 school.
Radio Message Broadcasting
We have been regularly broadcasting anti-trafficking message through local FM radio which broadcasts in six districts. The radio jingles are delivered in local Nepali dialogue which is very popular and effective in delivering anti-trafficking messages on a large scale. The main theme of this jingle is to spread messages about the importance of education and that you should not trust unknown people.
Legal Action against Traffickers
We have been working to protect children from trafficking for a long time and legal action against traffickers is one of the core components of our programme. There are two reasons for doing this: firstly to stop them trafficking children again and secondly to spread the message amongst middlemen that trafficking is a serious crime against humanity.
Thank you so much for your interest in our work. We continue to work tirelessly for the most forgotten and disadvantaged children in Nepal, but there are still children that need our help. Would you be willing to donate again?
