When a viral photograph showed a school principal carrying a student across a dangerous river during monsoon season, it highlighted a major problem facing rural schools in Nepal. While Child Rescue Nepal had been working with Kala School on new classrooms, the risky river crossing was still stopping children from getting to school safely, especially during the rainy season.
Building a bridge was a new approach for us. Instead of just focusing on classrooms, this project tackled the basic problem of getting to school safely. Our supporters got it straight away - great facilities don't help if children can't reach them. Within two weeks of asking for help, we had raised the full £25,000 needed to build the bridge.
The finished bridge changes everything for this community. What used to be a dangerous journey that kept many children away from school during the monsoons is now a safe, reliable route to learning. This project shows how solving basic access problems can be just as important as building better classrooms. Sometimes the most powerful way to help education happens outside the school walls.
