Improving rural schools in Nepal

Thank you so much for supporting the ongoing work of Child Rescue Nepal. 

We have just received this update from our colleagues in Kathmandu that demonstrates how, in the aftermath of the Earthquake, we are working to prevent the trafficking of very vulnerable children in Nepal. 

School Reconstruction  
According to the Disaster Report in  2015, more than 5,000 schools were damaged by the massive earthquake in 2015 in Nepal. Across the Makwanpur District 747 school buildings and 2,390 class rooms were damaged and thousands of students were affected. We are delighted to report that construction in our 22 allocated schools has been completed with the approval of the Nepal Reconstruction Authority. However there are still many more schools in need of classroom reconstruction, drinking water, toilets and other repairs and we are in the process of being allocated more schools.  

Poster Competition
Following on from the success of our last poster competition, we are now planning another one with local community schools on the theme of trafficking. Prizes will be given to the winners and certificates for all participants. The main objective of the programme will be to spread anti-child trafficking messages

Radio Message Broadcasting
We have been regularly broadcasting anti-trafficking message through local FM radio which broadcasts in six districts. The radio jingles are delivered in local Nepali dialogue which is very popular and effective in delivering anti-trafficking messages on a large scale. The main theme of this jingle is to spread messages about the importance of education and that you should not trust unknown people.

Legal Action against Traffickers
We have been working to protect children from trafficking for a long time and legal action against traffickers is one of the core components of our programme. There are two reasons for doing this: firstly to stop them trafficking children again and secondly to spread the message amongst middlemen that trafficking is a serious crime against humanity. 

Supporting the Families of Rescued Children
We have been regularly providing intensive support to children who have been reunited with their families after being rescued.  All together 17 children have been receiving support from us. Out of 17, five have been recently reunified with their family. These children are regularly going to school and happy with their families.

Rescues
In August 2017 we rescued 7 young boys from a metal work factory in Kathmandu. They were working from 4am til 9pm just for a few pence. They were sleeping on the floor and regularly beaten. One boy said he deliberately burnt himself just to stay awake. The boys are currently in our safe house whilst we trace and assess their family situation.
