Transforming lives through career guidance in rural areas

The Justiniano Echevarria Rural Educational Institution, situated in El Águila, Valle del Cauca (Colombia), is a participant in ESCALA, a program aimed to help rural students to stay in school and figure out their career path. We are engaged in guiding students through their journey of career exploration.

At this school, we concentrated on the personal growth of 120 students from various socioeconomic backgrounds. We assist them in shaping their life goals, and we're glad to see a rise in their ability to envision their aspirations. This has positively impacted their choices regarding jobs and further education opportunities.

Our efforts have contributed to students setting their goals, crucial for sustaining motivation and focus, particularly in an environment where opportunities may seem scarce. These goals not only help their personal and professional growth but also their development, both individually and within the community.

Also, throughout the program, we have provided training to 7 teachers on the utilization and management of guidance materials, with a keen focus on addressing the unique challenges encountered by our rural students.

Testimony:

…"And we realized that despite noticing the initial sadness and perhaps the demotivation of the students who started the program, today we have a different history because through this same evaluation we realized that they changed their way of thinking and they see in the program more than an academic model, an opportunity to express themselves and redirect their projects towards the future...

...What did you like most about this program? In every educational process, it is important to include families because they are the engine and the driving force of these young people. In the program, the opportunity was given for families to implement certain strategies that were included there. It was important to see the change in mentality of families through the process. This year, immediately after it ended, in 2023, we realized from the closure of the program with the young people that it was important to find in them those decisions and those opportunities that both the educational sector and the family sector provided."
