Dear friend,
September 6 was the first day of school at Nehemiah Gateway's two schools in Pogradec, and marks the start of a new school year in Albania.
The first day of school is a big deal in Albania. All over the country, children arrive on the first day dressed in their nicest clothes, hair neatly styled, with bouquets of flowers for their teachers. The youngest children are accompanied by their parents. It is a day of celebration every year—but why?
As a culture, Albanians don’t take education for granted. Being able to study Albanian in school, and have classes in the Albanian language, is fairly new. The first Albanian-language school in the country was a girls’ school founded in Korce in 1891. The Albanian alphabet was only finalized, with today’s Latin alphabet, in 1908. So, although Albanians have always spoken Albanian, they have not always been able to learn it in school. They understand how fundamental education is to their identities as Albanians, and how necessary it is in order to succeed in life.
