EMPOWERING PARENTS TO BE THEIR CHILDREN`S SHIELDS!

By Karina Martin | Director

In Zimbabwe, deaf women and girls face a heightened risk of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) due to communication barriers inherent in their disability. The silence surrounding these incidents is often compounded by a lack of awareness and understanding from their closest allies - their parents. Many cases of abuse remain hidden, not because these parents are unwilling to help, but because they lack the knowledge and resources to effectively protect their children from the lurking dangers of GBV. This disconnect leaves deaf girls and women particularly vulnerable, providing a harsh advantage to perpetrators.

Understanding the critical role parents play in safeguarding their children, Nzeve took a significant step forward by organizing GBV training sessions for both parents and spouses of deaf women and girls. This initiative was part of a week-long Deaf women and girls GBV camp held in February in collaboration with Family Support Trust and Adult Rape Clinic. The camp aimed to bridge the knowledge gap, focusing on the nuances of GBV, its profound impact on women with disabilities, and the pathways available for support and justice.

A fellow GBV organisation, Musasa led a compelling session, offering an in-depth look at GBV - from its definition to the various types and the available referral pathways for victims. Through interactive discussions and role-play, parents delved into the complexities of GBV, challenging their own perceptions and societal norms that often perpetuate violence. They were equipped with practical strategies to foster healthy, respectful relationships within their families, emphasizing the importance of open communication and active listening.

The engagement and emotional investment of the parents and spouses were palpable. Their eagerness to learn and support their daughters and wives reflected a collective commitment to change. One parent encapsulated the sentiment of many, expressing gratitude for the newfound knowledge and confidence to act as a protector: “I am grateful for this training. It has empowered me with the knowledge and wisdom to protect my daughter. I did not know where to first report abuse. This has helped me and my daughter.”

By extending GBV education to the parents and spouses of deaf women and girls, Nzeve has laid the groundwork for a more inclusive and effective fight against GBV in Zimbabwe. This initiative not only strengthens the support network for deaf girls and women but also contributes to a broader societal shift towards a future devoid of violence and discrimination. The training stands as a testament to the power of education and awareness in breaking the chains of silence that surround GBV for Deaf women and girls , paving the way for a safer, more equitable society for all. Together, we can fortify our defenses and protect deaf girls and women from GBV.
